For the Thanksgiving season, Holy Redeemer School students bring non-perishable food items for the poor people who are in need of food and nourishment. Each grade fills up many cartons of food. All the food are blessed by our Pastor after one of the weekly children's Masses and sent out to the local food banks.
During the Lenten Season, the Holy Redeemer School children collect money to help the needy families in poor countries administered by Catholic Relief Services. The idea is that each child gives up something for Lent and what money would have been spent for the sacrificed item would be placed into the rice bowl. In 2022, the children raised over $900!
Seventh and Eighth grade students volunteer to patrol the entrances and the crosswalks of Vine Street to ensure the safety of the children. They also monitor the hallways and stairwells to prevent any falls or injuries. These safety patrols are recognized each year by the city. and by the Philadelphia Phillies Baseball team.
LUNCH SETUP
Each table in the lunch room is set up for lunch by seventh grade volunteers. A placemat is laid before each seat where utensils, appetizers, hot entrees, and desserts are placed. These students take time out of their class to perform these daily activities.
CLEANUP
After each meal, volunteers from the upper grades clear the tables of the beverage and food containers into large rubbish bins, and wipe down the tables. Any uneaten food or beverages are carried over to a table for storage in the refrigerators or pantry. Each rubbish bin is emptied by strong upper grade students who take the bagged garbage to the trash hopper and then taken to the outdoor location for trash pickup.
BREAKFAST SETUP
A group of students package the next day's breakfast by placing a fruit item, a breakfast item, and a beverage into a ziplock bag which is placed into large cartons where they are taken and placed in the large refrigerators in the kitchen to keep for the next day.
Attendance - Each day, one volunteer goes to every classroom to collect the attendance sheets and return them to the staff.
Bell Captain - To begin the start of school, to end the school day, and to end the lunch recess, a volunteer rings a bell to announce these parts of a school day.
Safety Monitor - As the students go to class after breakfast and at dismissal, volunteers makes sure the students are safe in the stairwell. They also monitor the students in the morning recesses in each classroom and during lunch recess.
CHILDREN'S MASS
Each grade has volunteers to serve as altar servers, lectors of the Mass readings, and as collection ushers.
